11 September 2011

Autumn is here now and the evenings are starting to get darker. Don't be afraid to be the first one to put your headlights on! It's also a good idea to have a few evening lessons to get used to driving in the dark.

04 July 2011

The DSA are considering using places other than driving test centres to conduct driving tests from, such as hotels, to allow people more options of where to take their driving test.

20 June 2011

From today, anyone who is the registered keeper of a car but doesn’t have insurance for it, will receive a warning. If they don’t act on the warning by taking out insurance or declaring their vehicle off road, they will receive a £100 fine and could have their vehicle seized.

2nd June

Congratulations to Luan who passed his driving test today with 1 fault!!

1st June 2011

The Police have more powers to give on the spot fines to drivers for offences such as undertaking and tailgating. They can also offer the option of more driving awareness courses rather than penalty points.

11th May 2011

The DSA’s booking systems will be down for maintenance tonight, so you won’t be able to book or change a test. They will be working again tomorrow morning.

4th May 2011

The Highway code is 80 years old! It has helped save thousands of lives and contains information not just for drivers, but for all road users including pedestrians and horse riders. It is available in all formats including CD-Rom.

2nd March 2011

Congratulations to Nicola who passed her driving test yesterday first time with 0 faults, (despite being extremely nervous!). Well done!!

19th February 2011

A new law will be rolled out in late spring which means car owners must keep their vehicle insured unless they have notified the DVLA that is it is being kept off the road. This means even if you are not using your car, you must still insure it unless you have registered it officially as off road. Uninsured drivers cost everyone else money - on average £30 to your premium every year.

9th November 2010

The DSA will not be publishing theory test questions and answers anymore. Pupils will have to build up their general knowledge of driving rather than memorising questions and answers. Check out the DSA’s new facebook page for more info!

08 September 2010

The DSA have announced that they will not be publishing the new driving test routes for the new independent drive section of the driving test. This is to mimic real life driving. The individual should be able to find their way around following signs in areas they are unfamiliar with.

16 August 2010

The changes to the driving test are almost here. If you are booking a test now in Bournemouth, you will be looking at an October test with the current waiting times and will have to perform the independent drive section. See the DSA’s youtube video to learn more.

04 June 2010

The DSA are changing the way the driving test is done. They are taking out 1 reversing manoeuvre, so only 1 of the 4 will need to be performed, but they are adding an independent drive section. The examiner will ask you to follow road signs to a certain place, until they tell you otherwise. They may show you a diagram. It doesn’t matter if you go the wrong way, you will just be directed back on course. This section of the test will last approx 10 minutes. It is supposed to be more like real life driving with you thinking independently, and it does not affect pass rates.

18 April 2010

Recently people have experienced problems while trying to book driving tests online with the DSA. Their systems have now been restored and are working properly again.

08 march 2010

This week, some driving examiners are going on strike. It is only examiners who are members of the union. You are advised by the DSA to still arrive for your driving test, and if your test is cancelled, you will be informed and another one will be booked for you.

02 March 2010

From 6th April, your driving examiner will ask you if you would like an observer, (preferably the person who taught you to drive), to sit in the back of the car while you take your driving test. They will also ask you whether you would like them present for the debrief at the end of the driving test. It is recommended you do allow your instructor to at least listen to the debrief in the event you do not pass, in order for your lessons before your next test to be tailored to your needs and to rectify the problems in your failed test.

20 Feb 2010

It has been in the news recently about young people learning to drive under the age of 11 on private land. This has been raising concerns, because although children can learn the mechanics of driving a car, they are not learning the rules of the road and how to interact with other road users. These children may go on to pass their driving test at the age of 17 with few lessons and little experience on public roads, and statistically end up in a road accident during the following 6 months. Allowing 16 year olds to begin lessons on the road in real life traffic situations may be a better idea.

08 Feb 2010

There has been an advertising campaign recently regarding the importance of wearing a seat belt when you are in a car, and highlighting the fact that, even travelling at 30mph, you could die from the result of being involved in an accident and not wearing a seat belt.

As the car crashes and stops, your body continues to move as there is nothing to stop it. It then hits the inside of the car. Next, you stop, but your internal organs do not, they continue going until they hit the inside of your body. They can rupture with the force of the impact. You actually experience 3 crashes.

You are twice as likely to die in a crash if you do not wear a seat belt. Most people do not wear seat belts on short familiar journeys. Please please, always wear a seat belt. It is there to save your life, it takes seconds to apply, so use it!

06 Feb 2010

There is more snow predicted next week. In icy or snowy conditions, it can take up to 10 times as long to stop! Avoid harsh braking and accelerating. Higher gears can help to avoid wheelspin. If you skid, keep off the pedals until you are back in control of the car. Tyre pressures should be maintained not reduced.

01 Feb 2010

There has been a recall of  some Toyota and Peugot Citroen cars. The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will continue to take Toyota and Peugeot Citroen vehicles out on tests until formal risk assessments have taken place.
