Snow and ice driving

There is more snow predicted for parts of the UK next week. Driving in the snow can be very dangerous. Ice, snow and slush can lead to skidding. Remember the 2 second rule? It can take up to 10 TIMES as long to stop on ice, so leave a much bigger stopping distance between you and the car in front!

Seat Belt Campaign

A new campaign has launched about the importance of wearing a seat belt. Even at 30mph, you can die from a collision if you are not wearing a seat belt. Your organs are literally torn from your body from the impact of the crash. It takes a few seconds to apply, so even when on a familiar road, apply your seat belt and be safe.

11 Year Old Drivers

Are there more cons than pros to 11 year old children having driving lessons? Some companies are charging £50 an hour for children as young as 11 to have lessons on private land. Although allowing them to learn the mechanics of driving, they are not experiencing real life road and traffic situations. Often children can become over confident and intollerant of other drivers when they do go on public roads, leading to them taking risks and being inconsiderate to others. People like this might pass their test at 17 after having minimal lessons on public roads, but will they have the correct attitude to be a safe driver for life?

Observer on test

From April 6th, the DSA examiners will have to ask you 2 questions before you take your driving test. One is whether you would like your instructor to sit in on your test (in the back of the car), and one is whether you'd like your instructor to listen to the end of test debrief.

Changes coming soon to test

The changes to the driving test arrive on 4th October. To find out more, check out the DSA's Youtube video. You will be asked to follow signs towards a certain place for about ten minutes during your test. The examiner will not tell you to 'turn left' or 'turn right', you will have to find your own way. This mimics real life driving. There will be one less manouvre to perform on the driving test.

Test routes - new test

The DSA will not be publishing test routes for the new independent drive section of the driving test. This is to stop driving instructors learning the routes and teaching them to their pupils. Pupils should be able to follow signs in areas they are unfamiliar with. The new test will mimick real life driving and make pupils safer and more confident when they pass their test and drive independently.

New insurance rules

A new law will be rolled out in late spring which means car owners must keep their vehicle insured unless they have notified the DVLA that is it is being kept off the road. This means even if you are not using your car, you must still insure it unless you have registered it officially as off road. Uninsured drivers cost everyone else money - on average £30 to your premium every year.

Holiday driving!

It's now half term, and the summer hols are on their way! Around the Bournemouth area, it gets very busy on the roads. We are lucky enough to live in a seaside area which is popular with tourists, but it also means our roads are very busy around holiday times. Although most learner drivers or drivers without much experience might prefer to avoid the busy roads, it is a good idea to try and get out and have lessons and get some experience during these busy periods. That's real-life driving after all, and the sort of traffic that you will probably be driving in when you have passed your test!
