Before applying to the council for a licence you must pass a DSA driver competency test. This is a pre-requisite for some councils. I can give you the necessary training in order for you to bring your driving up to the required standard for taking the test.
My hourly charge is £20 and you shouldn’t need many hours of training if you are an experienced driver. If you prefer I can give you one lesson and point out any bad habits you may have developed, and tell you the things you need to work on and practice by yourself in order to pass safely.
The main differences between this and the ‘L’ test you will have already taken, are:
You will be asked a few questions on your Highway Code knowledge
You must not make more than nine minor driving faults
You will have a 'taxi manoeuvre'; this means that the examiner will tell you to pretend you've received a call for a client, but you will have to go back in the opposite direction. You will then have the choice of a 'U' turn in the mouth of a junction, a turn in the road, or a reverse into a side road (either on the left or right).
When you have passed the Driving Test, you must then agree to a Criminal Records Bureau check, and have a medical.
Although most drivers see their driving skills as above average, most drivers will require additional training to pass the test. It is a false economy to try the test without the necessary training. Some 'trainee' taxi drivers have taken 1, 2 or more tests and failed, only to realise that they need the training to be able to pass.
