Driving lessons in Weymouth!

Monkey’s Jump Roundabout near Weymouth!

If you ask locals in Weymouth and Dorchester how Monkey’s Jump roundabout got its name, you might often hear that it’s because of a café that used to be nearby (now McDonald’s).

In fact, there are other stories that include the name being derived from a circus monkey that escaped on that spot, and there being a monkey tree on the site. There is also a theory that it could be named after nearby Monkton Gate.

The most likely theory in fact comes from a lady who was passing by on a horse and cart in 1914 or 1915, and her pet monkey jumped out and escaped. Days later it was seen up a tree and thought to be a German spy, so was shot! Apparently it was a rather cheeky monkey and would jump out of the window when it was being naughty, hence the name Monkey’s Jump.

Another, rather less exciting theory, is just that Monkey’s Jump was a well-known name in the Victorian era.

Whatever the story, it is certainly an interesting name for a roundabout!
